Exploring the Hills of West Lake
We had one “free day” in Hangzhou without being accompanied by any guide. This was an adventure in itself, because English is so sparsely used across China. Trying to communicate our desired destination was a significant task, which we barely accomplished by bringing our city map and pointing to the dot for West Lake. It was a rainy day, but Annie and I took the local bus to West Lake, which is the leisure heart of the city. We spent the day exploring the paths in the hills. At times, we didn’t even realize we were in a city with a population of 10 million.
